Driving

White Rock is primarily a car-oriented community. Major highways connect you to Vancouver, Surrey, and the US border quickly, though rush hour can add significant time to the Vancouver commute.

Highway 99

The primary route connecting White Rock to Vancouver. Take Highway 99 north through Surrey, across the Alex Fraser Bridge, and into Vancouver.

  • Off-peak: 40-45 minutes to downtown Vancouver
  • Rush hour: 60-90 minutes (northbound AM, southbound PM)
  • Tunnel at Massey creates bottleneck (replacement project underway)
  • HOV lanes available for carpoolers

Highway 15 / 176 St

An alternate route north through Surrey, connecting to Highway 1 (Trans-Canada). Useful for reaching central Surrey, Langley, or the Port Mann Bridge to Coquitlam.

  • Good alternative when Hwy 99 is congested
  • 20-25 minutes to central Surrey
  • Connects to Trans-Canada Highway via Hwy 1
  • Commercial vehicle corridor

Border Crossings

White Rock's proximity to the US border is a major lifestyle advantage. Two crossings are within easy reach.

  • Peace Arch: 5 minutes from White Rock. Passenger vehicles only.
  • Pacific Highway (Truck crossing): 10 minutes. Sometimes faster than Peace Arch.
  • NEXUS lane dramatically reduces wait times (apply through CBSA)
  • Check border wait times at cbsa-asfc.gc.ca before heading out

E-Bikes in White Rock

E-bikes have become extremely popular in White Rock, and for good reason. The steep hillside grades of 8-12% between the waterfront and upper neighbourhoods make traditional cycling a serious workout. An e-bike turns a gruelling climb into an enjoyable ride.

  • Class 1 and 2 e-bikes permitted on all bike paths
  • Great for commuting to the beach, shops, and restaurants

The Hills

The biggest walking challenge in White Rock is the steep hill between the waterfront and the upper neighbourhoods. Johnston Road gains significant elevation over a short distance. Some stairways provide shortcuts but are not accessible for strollers or wheelchairs.

  • Hillside grades of 8-12% are common
  • Public stairways connect some hillside streets to the waterfront
  • Consider an e-bike or community shuttle for the hill
  • The walk down to the beach is easy; the walk back up is the workout

Airport Access

White Rock residents have convenient access to two airports, including a US option that can save money on flights.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

Canada's second-busiest airport with flights worldwide. Located on Sea Island in Richmond. 45-60 minutes from White Rock via Highway 99. Allow extra time during rush hour. Long-term parking available, or take the 351 bus to Bridgeport Station and connect to the Canada Line.

Bellingham International Airport (BLI)

A popular budget-friendly option just across the US border. 30 minutes from White Rock (plus border wait time). Airlines like Allegiant and Alaska Airlines offer affordable flights to US destinations. Many White Rock residents use BLI for domestic US travel to save significantly on airfare.

Getting to YVR by Transit

Take the 351 bus from White Rock Centre to Bridgeport Station (~50 min), then transfer to the Canada Line for a quick ride to YVR-Airport Station (~15 min). Total trip approximately 75-90 minutes. The Canada Line runs every 5-7 minutes.
